What is mind mapping?

Mind mapping is a way of organizing information in the same way our brains organize things. When we write things down, we generally tend to use a linear A to B type of approach. A good example is a Grocery List -- this is a linear, straight forward listing of items.

A simple list is great for remembering what to buy at the grocery store, but it tends to be less useful when doing things like planning an essay or taking notes from a lecture.

This is because a simple list doesn't show the relationships between things. When you want to plan an essay, however, the relationships between different points is critical.

This is the way our brain naturally functions -- in a non-linear way, with the emphasis on the relationhsips between ideas rather than the ideas themselves.

A mind map portrays ideas, words or concepts diagramatically around a key word or idea in the center.

Mind maps have been around since the 3rd century and are commonly used for learning, brainstorming, and solving problems.
